Slum Dwellers International (SDI) is a transnational network of community-based organizations that have constituted themselves into “federations” of the urban poor in 33 countries in Africa, Asia and Latin America. SDI, which was launched in 1996, provides a global platform for the “federations” to use their local development initiatives to influence the global agenda on urban development. That is, SDI engages governments, and international organizations to try alternative strategies, change policies and build understanding about the challenge of urban development.

The Zimbabwe Homeless People’s Federation, which is the local affiliate of SDI has used its membership to share and learn from other countries with similar challenges and implementing various innovations that promote security of tenure for the urban poor. In addition, the Zimbabwean chapter of SDI has used the global network as a learning platform through exchange visits for poor communities, policy-makers, local and central government officials.
